Details

The Seiko 5 Sports × Rowing Blazers Limited Edition Ref. SRPJ63 is a playful collaboration that brings together Seiko's legendary sports-watch heritage and the colorful, vintage-inspired aesthetic of New York clothing brand Rowing Blazers. Released in 2022 and limited to just 888 individually numbered pieces worldwide, this special edition was designed in collaboration with Rowing Blazers founder Jack Carlson and renowned vintage watch expert Eric Wind. Its 40mm stainless steel case features a classic Seiko sports-watch silhouette, while the glossy black dial is distinguished by vibrant multicolored hour markers inspired by Rowing Blazers' signature croquet-stripe pattern. A red-and-white striped seconds hand adds another distinctive touch, complemented by luminous hands, a bilingual English/Japanese day-date display at 3 o'clock, and a fixed stainless steel bezel. A Hardlex crystal, screw-down exhibition caseback featuring the Rowing Blazers “Derry Bones” motif, and 100 meters of water resistance complete the vintage-inspired design. The watch was originally supplied on a stainless steel bracelet with an additional black nylon strap featuring multicolored stripes and special collaborative packaging.

Inside is Seiko's dependable automatic Calibre 4R36, a 24-jewel mechanical movement operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour and delivering approximately 41 hours of power reserve. The movement features manual winding, hacking seconds, and a quickset day-date complication, making it a practical everyday companion. The Seiko 5 collection traces its origins to 1963 and has become one of the most recognizable entry points into mechanical watchmaking, celebrated for its reliability, versatility, and accessible design. The collaboration with Rowing Blazers introduces a distinctly modern personality to that heritage, combining traditional Seiko construction with the brand's signature mix of American prep, sporting culture, and unconventional color combinations. The black-dial SRPJ63 is particularly appealing for its unique multicolored hour markers, which distinguish it from the other three variations in the 2022 collection. With production limited to only 888 examples, distinctive collaborative details, and a reliable Japanese automatic movement, the SRPJ63 represents one of the most recognizable and collectible limited editions from the modern Seiko 5 Sports collection.

Brand History

Seiko's history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori opened a watch shop in Tokyo. In 1892, he established Seikosha, a factory for producing wall clocks. The company quickly progressed, creating Japan's first wristwatch, the Laurel, in 1913. Despite setbacks like the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, Seiko persevered, launching its first watch under the Seiko brand name in 1924.

The post-World War II era saw Seiko's rapid growth and innovation. They introduced Japan's first automatic wristwatch in 1956 and launched the prestigious Grand Seiko line in 1960. Seiko achieved international recognition for accuracy in 1968, winning a Geneva Observatory competition.

The company made a name for its divers in 1965 with the introduction of their first professional dive watch, the 62MAS. This was followed by the iconic 6159-7001 in 1968, which was water-resistant to 300 meters. Seiko gained international recognition in 1975 with the release of the 6159-7010, nicknamed the "Tuna Can" due to its distinctive case shape. In 1969, they revolutionized the industry with the Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch, ushering a new era of watchmaking that would send waves across the industry through the 70s and 80s. From its humble beginnings to becoming a global watchmaking giant, Seiko's history is characterized by resilience, technological advancement, and a commitment to precision.
