Details

The Rolex Explorer I Ref. 124270 represents a return to the classic proportions and understated design that have defined the Explorer collection for more than seven decades. Introduced in 2021, the 124270 brought the Explorer back to its traditional 36mm case size, replacing the larger 39mm generation and reconnecting the watch with its original mountaineering heritage. Crafted from Rolex's highly corrosion-resistant Oystersteel, the case features a smooth polished bezel, brushed lugs, and the unmistakable black dial with oversized Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. The applied white-gold hour markers and Mercedes-style hands are filled with Rolex's Chromalight luminous material, providing excellent legibility in low-light conditions. A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, screw-down Twinlock crown, and 100 meters of water resistance reinforce the Explorer's reputation as a dependable everyday tool watch. Completing the design is Rolex's three-link Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock safety clasp and Easylink extension system, allowing approximately 5mm of adjustment without tools.

Powering the 124270 is Rolex's in-house Calibre 3230, a self-winding mechanical movement operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivering an impressive 70-hour power reserve. The movement incorporates Rolex's highly efficient Chronergy escapement, paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring, and Paraflex shock absorbers, providing exceptional reliability and resistance to everyday impacts. As a Superlative Chronometer, the completed watch is certified to an accuracy of -2/+2 seconds per day, exceeding traditional COSC chronometer standards. The Explorer's origins trace back to Rolex's involvement in Himalayan expeditions during the early 1950s, culminating in the historic 1953 ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. With its historically inspired 36mm proportions, iconic 3-6-9 dial, modern Calibre 3230, and timeless stainless steel construction, the Ref. 124270 captures the Explorer in one of its purest forms, combining vintage Rolex character with contemporary mechanical performance.
