Details

The Omega Speedmaster Professional Tokyo 2020 “Panda” Ref. 522.30.42.30.04.001 is one of the most sought-after variations from Omega's special Olympic Games collection, combining the legendary Moonwatch design with a striking and historically inspired dial. Released in 2018 to commemorate the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and Omega's longstanding role as Official Timekeeper, the collection consisted of five distinct Speedmasters representing the five Olympic rings, each limited to just 2,020 individually numbered examples and originally available exclusively in Japan. The Panda edition represents the black Olympic ring and features a beautiful opaline silver-white dial with three contrasting black chronograph subdials, creating a classic motorsport-inspired appearance reminiscent of the highly collectible Apollo 11 35th Anniversary Speedmaster from 2004. Its 42mm asymmetrical stainless steel case retains the iconic twisted lyre lugs and protective crown guards of the Speedmaster Professional, while the black anodized aluminum tachymeter bezel reinforces its vintage racing heritage. Rhodium-plated hands, applied 18k white gold hour markers, a red Speedmaster signature, and a red-tipped chronograph seconds hand provide subtle contrasting details. A box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, stainless steel bracelet, and 50 meters of water resistance complete the design. The solid caseback features the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games emblem and the watch's individual limited-edition number.

Inside is Omega's legendary manually wound Calibre 1861, an 18-jewel chronograph movement operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour and delivering approximately 48 hours of power reserve. Descended from the movement architecture used in the Speedmasters that accompanied NASA astronauts during the Apollo missions, the Calibre 1861 remains one of the most recognizable mechanical chronograph movements in watchmaking history. It powers the traditional three-register layout, with running seconds at 9 o'clock, a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3, and a 12-hour counter at 6, preserving the functionality that made the Speedmaster famous. The Tokyo 2020 collection also represents an important moment in modern Speedmaster history, arriving near the end of the Calibre 1861 era before Omega introduced the updated Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 into the standard Moonwatch collection in 2021. With its exceptional silver-and-black Panda dial, Japan-exclusive release, production limited to only 2,020 examples, commemorative Olympic caseback, and classic manually wound movement, the Ref. 522.30.42.30.04.001 stands among the most visually distinctive and collectible limited-edition Speedmasters of its generation.
