Details

The Omega Speedmaster “First Omega in Space” (FOIS) Ref. 311.32.40.30.01.001 was introduced in 2012 as a modern tribute to the Speedmaster worn by astronaut Wally Schirra during the Mercury-Atlas 8 “Sigma 7” mission on October 3, 1962—the first Omega watch to travel into space. Inspired by Schirra’s personal CK2998, the FOIS uses a compact 39.7mm stainless steel case with symmetrical straight lugs, giving it a noticeably different profile from the 42mm asymmetrical Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. Its varnished black dial features three recessed chronograph registers, an applied Omega logo, vintage-inspired Alpha-style hour and minute hands, and a black aluminum tachymeter bezel. Unlike the vintage CK2998, Omega fitted the FOIS with a box-form sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective treatment. The solid caseback carries the original-style Seahorse emblem along with commemorative “The First Omega in Space” and “October 3, 1962” inscriptions. The watch is water resistant to 50 meters and was originally delivered on a brown leather strap. Importantly, the FOIS was a numbered edition rather than a fixed-production limited edition.

Powering the FOIS is Omega’s manually wound Calibre 1861, the same basic movement used in the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch of the period. The 18-jewel chronograph operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides approximately 48 hours of power reserve, driving central chronograph seconds, a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, 12-hour counter at 6, and running seconds at 9. Omega ultimately discontinued this generation of the FOIS around 2020, leaving Ref. 311.32.40.30.01.001 as a particularly interesting chapter in modern Speedmaster history. Its smaller 39.7mm case, straight-lug CK2998-inspired architecture, Alpha hands, Calibre 1861, and connection to the first Omega actually worn in space give it a character distinctly different from the standard Moonwatch and make it one of the more historically focused Speedmaster releases of its era.
