Omega Speedmaster 310.30.42.50.01.002 Sapphire

The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Ref. 310.30.42.50.01.002, commonly known as the “Sapphire Sandwich,” is the modern evolution of the legendary chronograph worn during NASA’s Apollo missions. Introduced in 2021, it retains the classic 42mm asymmetrical stainless steel case while bringing back several vintage-inspired details associated with the fourth-generation Speedmaster, including the stepped black dial, teardrop-style chronograph seconds counterweight, and black anodized aluminum tachymeter bezel with the historically correct “Dot Over 90.” Unlike the traditional Hesalite Moonwatch, this version features a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal on the front and a sapphire exhibition caseback, allowing the movement to be viewed from both sides—hence the “Sapphire Sandwich” nickname. An applied Omega logo and polished intermediate bracelet links further distinguish the sapphire model, while the tapered five-link-style stainless steel bracelet gives the watch a noticeably more vintage-inspired profile than the previous generation. Water resistance is rated to 50 meters.

Visible through the caseback is Omega’s manually wound Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, the modern descendant of the movement architecture that powered the Speedmasters used on the Moon. Operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, the movement delivers approximately 50 hours of power reserve and incorporates Omega’s Co-Axial escapement and silicon balance spring while offering resistance to magnetic fields exceeding 15,000 gauss. The 3861 is both COSC-certified and METAS-certified as a Master Chronometer, representing a major technical advancement over the Calibre 1861 used in the previous Moonwatch generation. Beautifully visible through the sapphire back with rhodium-plated bridges and Côtes de Genève finishing, the movement gives the 310.30.42.50.01.002 a more mechanical and refined character while preserving the manual-winding experience central to the Speedmaster’s identity. Combining historic Moonwatch styling with sapphire construction and Omega’s modern 3861 movement, the “Sapphire Sandwich” bridges the Speedmaster’s space-flight heritage with contemporary watchmaking technology.
